 inspiration for creativity and innovation

Land & Sea

Every tiny place on earth has its own solitary elusive atmosphere, the envelope of light and color that changes from moment to moment.

I humbly use color to incorporate the surrounding atmosphere and the movement of wind and water into the tenor of my landscape paintings. It resonates with my sense of the ephemeral, that delicate, changing balance in nature.

Sometimes you just want to feel the timeless memory of spending a whole day in the woods, or smelling the salt sea air and the world around you.

Mustard with Old Vine Zin - Napa, CA
Oil on panel, 18" x 24"
Showing at The Passdoor

Drive south of Napa on Hwy 29 and you'll find a haven of history, beauty and culture. In February, we have the magic of the field mustard growing in the vineyards. Stunning.

Perfect Morning - Mendocino
Oil on panel, 12" x 16"

What a perfect morning. Sunshine in Mendocino! The water was such an extraordinary deep, rich mix of blues that I just kept saying, "Wow."

Breathe Deeply - It's Spring!
Oil on panel, 9" x 12"

Spring has such a feminine mystique - so much regeneration and soft, clean hues.

Oil painting of two pears
Pear Cousins
Oil on canvas,
6" x 6"

We used to have a small espalier pear tree that was grafted with Bosc, D'anjou, and Bartlett pears, and these two pears are from that tree. Horticulture is a pretty wonderful science. I remember the fruit trees of every place I ever lived.
Oil painting of Scottish Highland calf
Alpine Calf - Oil on panel, 8" x 10"

The Scottish Highland cattle have been adopted by the Swiss and this calf was quite a happy little guy. I have seen them in many parts of Switzerland. It makes sense that such a breed would do well in the grassy alps. This was particularly lovely day in Interlaken, and our loft was just a stone's throw away.

small oil painting of Goat Rock, Sonoma coast
Goat Rock,
Oil on panel, 8" x 10"

I have a ritual of commemorating New Years Day by going out to the coast or to the woods, and then paint the freshness and the hope of the new year.

New Years Day - California Coastline
Oil on panel, 24" x 31.5"

I received one of those 2:00 am calls early that morning, the kind that makes your heart stop. My daughter's house was flooding from a terrible storm. "A rake just floated by", she said. Her sisters and I traveled from northern and southern California to see her and support her. We brought love, and we laughed and cried. We stayed at a hotel on the coast where I photographed this scene and the low light skimming across the water. New Years Day, and everyone was safe. That's what was important.

large Oil painting of Bodega head
Yin Yang - Bodega Head, diptych, Oil on canvas, 30" x 54"

It was dusk, and we were on our way to dinner. It felt like such a stunning sky for a birthday, adding even more
celebration to the evening.
oil painting of Tomales Bay
Morning Tide - Tomales Bay,
Oil on panel, 18" x 24"

The Inverness Series

I was drawn to the scene by the contrast of the warm colored marsh and the cool, blue light from the sky upon the water.
Oil painting of an egret, Tomales Bay
Egret - Tomales Bay
Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
The Inverness Series

It is just so enjoyable for me to paint a creature, a lovely bird, a frog, a bug. And it feels free and comfortable, like climbing up into my mother's lap.
Oil painting of frosty field in Inverness, CA
Homage to Segantini
Oil on panel, 18" x 24"
The Inverness Series

I was attracted by the vast expanse of textural cadence in this frosty early morning scene that lies in the foreground of Tomales Bay. Inspired by Segantini’s clear affection for the Swiss countryside and his Division style that exudes such radiance, I was drawn to experience color in waves of movement and the eternal rhythm of the changing seasons.
Picture
Swan Lake - Grand Teton National Park
Oil on panel, 18" x 24"

We took the Swan Lake - Heron Pond Trail in Wyoming, an 8 mile loop that revealed exceptional quiet beauty. Everything about Grand Teton National Park is beyond remarkable.
Picture
Two Fujis -
Oil on panel, 6" x 6"

These small apples are part of my small works series.

Picture
Incanto -
Oil on panel, 11" x 14"

I snatched these red and orange roses from my garden and immediately got to work painting them. They project the immense joy that was present in my innermost being.

Picture
West Shore Road - Bodega Bay, Oil on panel, 8" x 10"

Have you ever gone to Bodega Bay and tried the coastal food at the Spud Point Crab Company? The view of this painting is very near there, looking east across the bay on West Shore Road. Enjoy the charming, non-touristy marina and eateries. It's the real deal.
Picture
Estero in Carmel, Oil on panel, 9" x 12"

This is a break-through painting for me. The stealy blue-greens were a trick to mix and successfully pull off the effect of the overcast, misty atmosphere of the morning.
